Wilton is proud to finally honor the legacy of Pomp Russell, a Revolutionary War soldier whose story was nearly lost to time. During this year’s War Memorial Celebration, we will officially unveil his name on the town’s Revolutionary War Memorial, ensuring his service and sacrifice are permanently recognized alongside his fellow patriots.
Pomp Russell was an enslaved African American soldier and Wilton resident who served during the American Revolution. Enlisting in the Continental Army, and fighting at the Battle of Bennington, he fought for the very independence we celebrate today, despite the immense personal and societal challenges of his era. By adding his name to the memorial, Wilton acknowledges a vital chapter of our local history that has been overlooked until now, and honors a man who fought for the cause of liberty.
